Alder Springs Vineyard, in northern Mendocino County, is located between 1,750 and 2,700 feet elevation on the side of a mountain, about seven miles from the Pacific Ocean. This geography creates some aggressive, high-density hillside vineyard projects that necessitate careful planning and land stewardship as core principals. High-density planting techniques allow each Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vine to focus on less fruit and more intensity. With southern and eastern exposures, Alder Springs Vineyard’s warm days and cool nights, combined with microclimates and outstanding soils, make for a truly extraordinary site. Stuart Bewley, the vineyard owner, takes great pride in growing the finest grapes possible with tight vine spacing and low-yields that produce tiny berries with a high skin-to-juice ratio for concentrated, dark wines.
